Grids and Layout
The task set by Joseph Frascina
This task is all about making and breaking the grid. There are a number of ways to set up a grid when designing your editorial;
- Format — The full design area
- Margins
- Flowlines — Helps the reader follow the content
- Rows — Horizontal
- Colomns — Vertical
- Modules — Boxes made from the crossover of rows and colomns.
- Spacial Zones — Group of modules
- Gutter space — The gaps between rows and colomns.
Some diferent types of grid include:
- Manuscript — Used for books or large areas of text
- Baseline
- Colomn
- Modular
The task set by Joe at first was to use a grid structure and use the elements given to create a spread. I used a colomn grid and this was my design.
I think that this looks clean and fresh. I quite like the structure but it is not very exciting to look at in my opinion. So I was very excited to start on the second part of this task which was breaking the grid, this is what I came up with.
Straight away, there is a lot more going on and it is much more visually exciting. I would look at this spread for much longer than the organised one. This is why I now realise how important it is to break the grid.
